Smooth travels sent us from the relative warmth of East TN to the frigid temperatures of Crested Butte, CO on January 12th with overnight temperatures in the -23 plus (or should I say more negative) degree range. On Sunday, we awoke to -20 degs., but waited until the thermometer decided to rise to a balmy -10 degs. before tackling the slopes. Skiing conditions were generally quite good with some thin spots to be wary of. Apparently, all the snow decided to head to Mammoth and Steamboat from what I hear leaving dry conditions at the Butte. Later that evening, on we went to the Welcome party and as you can see, enjoyed some mechanical bull riding. Leslie McCallister decided to be the bravest and hop on first to show us how it's done. What a hoot. On Monday we all got to join in on the "Poker Run"...but alas, a lousy hand for me. However, It being Leslie's first try at the run, she did awesome with her timing and made it back in 4th place! Tuesday again brought about colder temperatures with the high at -6 degs. It was definitely a day to ski to lunch and then dive into the hot tub to wonder at the icicle formation on exposed parts. The hot tub always is soooo inviting...We awoke Wednesday to head to the slopes of "Monarch" ski resort. It was a fun, smaller resort with lots of fun terrain. Unfortunately, we could have used more snow leading to tricky dodging of rocks, trees, etc. Leslie and I being adventurous decided to do some uphill hiking to the "Gunbarrel trail" in pursuit of an easy mogul trail with the reality of it ending in a death slope to the parking lot. Being of reasonably sound minds, we decided to turn tail and go back to save our body parts. Monarch was also a challenge for those on the verge of altitude sickness, because if you didn't have it, you would that day at the elevation of 10,000 ft. at the base. Beth Dison unfortunately fell victim, but recovered nicely. On Thursday was the Fun Race followed by the Farewell dinner and dance that evening. I myself didn't run the race, but could see that it was quite challenging. Our own Lisa Beregi came in second for the females on the course. The dinner and dance had great food and a wonderful DJ as we all danced the night away! With our last day to ski on Friday, being pooped out, I skipped out to town after a 1/2 day to the quaint town of Crested Butte. For a bit of trivia, Butch Cassidy left his pistol in the bar "Kochevars" downtown when the posse was after him and Sundance. The pistol was there for many years, but now is no longer there. (I did see it there in 1998, my first trip out West skiing!). That evening we headed to "The Wooden Nickel" for some wonderful food to fill our bellies for the long ride home the next morning. In closing, it was a wonderful trip with a beautiful mountain! And, Thank goodness we are all healthy and continuing to enjoy the Winter season!
