What perfect timing! For those of us who went, approximately 10 ft of new snow fell the week before we arrived, followed by Blue skies and Sunshine for our visit! Enjoy some of the pictures!

ETMM Wins Regular Season Title for the 8th time...

ETMM Dominated the 2007-2008 race season in the CSC Western Division by winning 3 races and placing 2nd in the other 2 races of the regular season to win its 8th Regular Season Title. ETMM wrapped up the season by winning the GS competition and placing 2nd in the Slalom events held at Sugar Mountain Feb 23 & 24. We had 11 different racers making it to the podium at Sugar Mountain.

Crescent Race Finals

by Mark Dison

The weekend trip to Silver Creek/Snowshoe, West Virginia March 7-9 was just about the end of ski season for most southeast skiers, but out west the snow is still deep. So a few of us went to Steamboat Springs, Colorado the following weekend (March 13-17) for the NASTAR National Championships. Several Crescent Ski Council members attended, along with three from our club.

ETMM members traveling to the Colorado race weekend were J.R. Thacker, his son Evan, and Mark Dison. Those of you who have been to the NASTAR National Championships know what I mean when I say it was a good time. The folks representing both Steamboat Springs and NASTAR treated us as if we were VIPs. They gave us all manner of trinkets and souvenirs to commemorate the occasion and served up music, food, and good memories. There were door prize type drawings daily and that's how J.R. took home a new pair of skis.

The snow was good (on Thursday night during the reception it began to snow and continued for most of the night) and the racing was very competitive. After racing on Friday J.R, Evan, and I went to the trees to enjoy the fresh powder. We all did pretty well on Friday as JR finished 2nd, Evan 4th, and I was 5th. Friday evening awards included meeting the US ski team members as well as several former members who were there acting as pacesetters and awards presenters.

Saturday we raced again and again Evan Thacker placed 4th, just missing a podium finish. I crashed on one run and didn't bring home the bacon on the second run while J.R. Thacker had a good day, climbing to 1st place in his division, winning a beautiful NASTAR National Championship medal, new ski poles, and a new Descente race suit. After awards we rode the gondola to mid-mountain for food, music, and mingling with the US Ski Team folks and the other racers. We all collected some autographs on our commemorative race bibs and had a nice evening.

On Sunday Evan and I hung out near the race of champions’ course to watch the action and wait for J.R. He did well, holding second place overall for quite a time, until being bumped to third and then, off the podium. However, he finished in 7th place in the men's division during the Race of Champions and represented ETMM and Crescent very well

By the way, sharing a chairlift with former ski team member A.J. Kitt was quite enjoyable. Turns out him, his wife, and Chad Fleischer are all NASCAR fans. What about that?

We finished the weekend by free skiing in Christmas Tree Bowl and then I called it a day and headed in to begin packing while Evan and J.R. hit the chutes for a few more runs to end the season. All in all, I have to say it was quite an experience attending the NASTAR event and we all agreed that we may do it again next time, if possible. If you haven't been to one of these NASTAR Nationals competitions, I highly recommend that you give it a go. It was very much an enjoyable experience.

When you see J.R. Thacker at a club meeting be sure to congratulate him on his great division championship win and overall placing. And watch for his son Evan next time!

ETMM finishes 3rd in Crescent Cup Finals at Snowshoe

The East Tennessee Mogul Masher Ski Club (ETMM) followed up its Western Division Championship by placing 3rd out of 14 teams in the Crescent Cup held at Silver Creek / Snowshoe last weekend. ETMM had 8 different racers making it to the podium at Silver Creek.

ETMM also had 2 of the top racers in all of Crescent (15 teams) for overall point’s championship with Parker Brown placing 2nd in the Men’s Division and Lisa Beregi placing 2nd in the Women’s division. Great Job!!

ETMM had 4 new racers qualify to race this season; let’s all welcome them to the team- Evan Thacker, JR Thacker, Sig Holcomb and Payten Hollen.

CSC Spring Convention

If you didn’t attend this year’s Beach Trip then you missed a great weekend. For the second year in a row the weather was great; it actually started to rain on Sunday as we were pulling out of the parking lot heading home. The weather was great on Friday for soaking up some sun although some of us may try deep-sea fishing next year (If you read the info packet you find out about these things before it’s too late). Saturday on the beach was ideal; so good that we never made it to the hot tub for Jell-O shooters! On Saturday evening we had dinner at Margaritaville with local H.B. Beverly providing the entertainment. For the costume party Cathy made the winning costumes for us – Rick, Buddy, and Mark – we went as the Fruit of the Loom guys. Even though we really ate up posing for a lot of pictures, the most fun was in getting dressed. Something about the combination of alcohol, safety pins, and balloons! Also, imagine if you will, all 110 lbs of John dressed as the Pillsbury Dough Boy. He actually pulled it off, great costume!! Rick and Cathy had tickets for the Jimmy Buffet concert on Tuesday in Charlotte so they were staying a couple of extra days at the beach. Aaron (who with his wife Cindy returned to the Beach Trip after several years’ absence) suggested that next year we rent a bus to take us to the beach and to the Buffet concert. With fuel costs out of hand and the low cost of everything on the Beach Trip this may be the ideal way to go. We’ll follow-up on this idea early next year when the info becomes available. ~ Buddy Ball

The CSC Spring Convention was held April 25 thru 27 and ETMM was well represented as usual. There were plenty of meetings to attend and ski vendors to talk to but we also had some fun. ETMM members won the costume contests for both the group award and solo costume award with the Fruit of the Loom guys and the Pillsbury Boy (photos shown elsewhere in the newsletter). ETMM was also part of the winning Golf team and participated in several of the Beach Olympics. ETMM also introduced the world to "Corn Hole" which quickly became the hit of the beach Olympics. The weather was fantastic with temps around 80 and a light breeze so it didn’t get too hot. The 100 mile rule is in effect so we can’t publish too much info on all of the fun – I guess you’ll just have to go next year if you want to find out what goes on at Myrtle Beach the last weekend in April at the Spring Convention. ~ Mark Mabry

With the ETMM gods being nice to us for a change, the weather was perfect. In attendance were 25 golfers ready to battle for first place at Warriors State Park, Saturday May 17th. We did extend an invitation to other close by teams, Knoxville and Asheville.

Well Asheville took the Gold! Below are the winners to losers:

  • Number 1, First Place: Kristi Carrier and Perry James
  • Second place: Evan Thacker and Jeff Frazier
  • Third place: Paul Dobson and Dwight Moore
  • Fourth place: David Sliger and Danny Woods
  • Fifth place: Mark and Larry Dison
  • Sixth place: Rookie Sliger and Mark Mabry
  • Seventh place: Tom Lick and Chase King
  • Eighth place: Fred Rice and Bill Dison
  • Ninth place: Teresa and Tony Gouge
  • Tenth place: Parker and Jamie Brown
  • Eleventh place: Alan Stevens, Chuck Deering, Abe Lincoln (come on three on a team??)
  • Twelfth place: JR Thacker and Ethan Frazier (sorry)

Notice I did not put the scores (smile)!

The 19th hole was hosted by Mark and Lisa Mabry at their home. Door prizes were also given with everyone fighting over a 10 pound bar of nestle crunch bar which was the grand prize. Danny Woods was the lucky winner.

Grilled dogs and everyone brought a covered dish for yummy food! I swam with the Deering children which was very relaxing and WARM for May 17th, thanks Mabry’s for heating your pool.

I would like to thank Smyth Wholesale, Cattails Golf Course, Greysburg Golf Course, Warriors Golf Course and Mark Mabry for all the prizes we were able to give out to the winners and for door prizes. Until next year: Hit ‘em long and straight!

Captain for a Day

What a Great day! As to be expected the Dawn of Hope residents and their staff had a marvelous day on Boone Lake, and as always, expressed their sincere gratitude for this wonderful event. It turned out to be a perfect day with amazing weather and calm "seas". After an interesting morning of lake navigation by the residents we headed for "Tucan Landing" for lunch with the Dawn of Hope crew then departing post festivities with their grab bags in tow. Untold Thanks goes out to all of those who donated and participated in bringing a day of joy to these folks.

Shortly thereafter, our annual Lake party ensued with an awesome turnout! For those of you who couldn't make it, we missed you. The mashers got to enjoy jet skiing, boating and priceless friendship at lakeside. Aaron and Cindy Hawkins provided their homemade pork BBQ which was spectacular! (Actually I'm craving some now...) and of course we had all the "fixins" that were fat-free. Profuse Thanks goes out to Alan Stevens and Wayne & Debbie Bays for hosting the party! Let's continue in future years to make this a special day! ~ Barb Lang

The Captain for a Day event was another huge success this year. The Dawn of Hope residents & families really enjoy and appreciate the boat outing and look forward to it every year. I would like to thank everyone involved whether you supplied a boat, supplies for the gift bag, or helped out on the boats – it was an excellent ETMM team effort. A special thanks to Betsy Pearce for coordinating the event this year. ~ Mark Mabry

Thank You from Betsy the ETMM Event Coordinator

I want to thank all of the following for their part in making Captain for a Day successful. Those who provided boats a big thank you. We couldn't have done it without you. To those Mogul Mashers who had as much fun as the residents, Sonny's Marina who was gracious enough for us to use their dock, Hallmark cards who provided balloons, to all those who provided items for the gift bags, The Dance's for providing Captain For A Day hats, to Veronica who made the great cupcakes, the Mabry's who provided pictures and frames, to the Bays and Stevens for letting us use their dock for lunch. Thank you each and every one of you who participated in this great event.

I thank you because this is a group effort and shows what a great club we are.

The residents had so much fun. Some even ask when are we getting our presents. They remembered. On this day it maybe God's way of showing all of us how blessed we are.

Also, a really big thank you to God for such a beautiful day.

The race season started at Appalachian mountain on December 20th and 21st. Our team started slowly with a 5th place finish on Saturday, however on Sunday we tied for first. Our point totals left us in 4th place overall after both days, but Sunday's performance proved that we have what it takes to compete for the division title.

We had several podium finishes on both days, especially on Sunday. We had some folks in flight 22 who just missed qualifying, and will probably make it on the next attempt. However, Joy Thacker did qualify with a 60.7 handicap and we welcome her to the team!

Special thanks to Alex Dance for volunteering for gatekeeping duties in place of one of the racers who was absent on Sunday. His unselfish gesture is very much appreciated!
